Thissa Abesekara bids farewell to nation; last respects in Colombo on Wednesday


(Lanka-e-News, 19.April.2009,7.00pm) A superb screenplay writer, cinema critic, director, actor and a writer of Sri Lanka, Thissa Abesekara passed away in the evening on April 18.

He wrote the screenplay and directed the films Viragaya, Mahagedara, Karumakkarayo and teledrama Pitagamkarayo. He wrote dialogues for renowned cinematographer Lester James Peris's Gamperaliya and Delowak Athara movies. Thissa Abesekara was 69 years old by the time he passed away.

He is considered a significant intellectual in literature, cinema and political ideology. He held a number of posts in the state sector including the post of Chairman of the National Film Corporation. He is a politburo member of Lanka Samasamaja Party.

Thissa Abesekara passed away following brief stay in hospital after a sudden stroke. His funeral will take place in Colombo on Wednesday (22).

The remains now placed in his house will be taken to the headquarters of the Lanka Samasamaja Party on 10 pm, Tuesday. The remains will be taken to the National Film Corporation on 1.00 pm, Wednesday and will be placed in Art Gallery for last respects since 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm the same day.

Mr. Abesekara leaves behind his wife and five children....
